7-Day Skincare Blog Series: “Why Glass Skin Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

Day 1 – Stratum Corneum Thickness

Your Skin’s Outer Shield: Why Thickness Differs and What It Means for Glow

Did you know the top layer of your skin—the stratum corneum—can be naturally thicker or thinner depending on your heritage?

Asian skin has a more compact but slightly thinner stratum corneum compared to skin with deep pigmentation. This thinness allows more light to pass through, creating that smooth, “glass-like” reflection many associate with the “glass skin” trend.

In melanin-rich skin, the stratum corneum is thicker and more cohesive. This extra protection is an evolutionary advantage—it helps resist dehydration and environmental stress. However, it also means light scatters differently, resulting in a beautiful natural matte or satin finish rather than a dewy shine.

Remember: A thicker barrier isn’t something to “fix”—it’s something to honour. It keeps your skin resilient and healthy.

Why this matters:
Trying to thin your skin barrier with excessive exfoliation to achieve a “glass” finish can harm your skin’s integrity, especially if you have a thicker barrier by design.

Healthy skin isn’t measured by how shiny it is. Your barrier thickness is a gift.
