Melanin Magic: Why Richer Skin Tones Glow Differently

Melanin is more than just pigment. It’s protection, resilience, and beauty.

In melanin-rich skin, melanosomes are larger, more numerous, and distributed evenly through all epidermal layers. This provides significant defence against UV rays, reducing the risk of DNA damage and sunburn.

Asian skin contains moderate melanin, allowing for more light penetration and reflection, which is part of the reason glass skin appears so translucent.

What does this mean for “glass skin”?

Because melanin absorbs and scatters light, melanin-rich skin tones naturally look less see-through. Attempts to mimic the optical illusion of glass skin through harsh exfoliants or bleaching not only risk irritation but can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) which can be challenging to treat in the long run.

A melanin-rich skin glow comes from an even tone and a healthy barrier function, not from forced translucency.
